- No, this is not a joke. It may seem crass, but I assure
- you this offer is made with every good intention. I am SO
- frustrated by my inability to get to the bottom of a Win95
- comm. mystery that I will send anyone, anywhere US$30 if they
- can provide a solution. The $30 amount is arbitrary. If I were
- a wealthy person I'd offer more, such is my frustration. I
- simply don't think I can answer this one on my own, and it's
- burning me up.
-
- Please don't refer me to the standard answers. I've
- been through hell with the standards, even tried modifying
- RWIN, DefaultTTL and MTU settings, to no avail.
-
- I'll try to provide all relevant details. Feel free
- to probe for more info.
-
- THE SYMPTOMS: At certain www sites I cannot download more
- than ~20K of any *.aiff, *.wav or *mov files.
-
- ALSO: I recently attempted to download Netscape (2.05b) from
- four different locations. Each time the download froze at exactly
- 2962K (80%).
-
- 1. On other sites I have no problem, and on at least one site
- I have tried two of the same type of *.wav files - one choked at
- 20K, one d/l'ed properly. I do not have trouble with ftp, only
- transfers via the WWW.
-
- 2. This only happens on my two systems that use Win95's Dial-Up
- Networking to access a PPP connection. On a third, running
- Win 3.1 with Spry's 16-bit dialer and 16-bit Netscape, I don't
- have this problem.
-
- One of the Win95 systems and the Win3.1 system are accessing
- the same PPP connection. Another Win95 system is accessing PPP
- from the same provider, different account. The former systems
- accesses via a dynamic IP address, the latter, static.
-
- The problem only occurs on the Win95 systems.
-
- Therefore the fault is with Win95, my configuration of same or
- the way certain sites communicate with it.
-
- 3. This occurs in NCSA Mosaic 16-bit on one of the Win95 systems,
- so it is not a Netscape-specific prob.
-
- 4. In every other respect my set ups are working perfectly, they
- are all fast and solid. The two Win95 systems use the same type
- of USR 28800 V.34 modem. It should be noted that one of the two
- Win95 systems did not exhibit this problem when it was running
- WFW3.11 using the same modem (the other system has been running
- Win95 from the beginning).
-
-
- There is just one other thing that the two malfunctioning
- Win95 systems have in common. They both have Spry's Internet
- in a Box installed, although it is rarely used (it may have
- set some environmental variable as part of the installation,
- however).

-
- Here is a site to test on:
-
- Attempt to retrieve *.mov files from
-
- http://www.helloindia.com/india/randr/whosro.shtml
-
- Or try getting *aiff files from
-
- http://www.helloindia.com/india/music/mansur.shtml
-
- I have never been able to get past 20k or so in any attempt to
- download from this site.
-
- If anyone can offer a solution to this mystery, I will gladly
- send along US$30, in any form preferred.
-
- Sincerely, David G. Imber
